From statistical studies of quasar samples it is well known that the cross-section of the sharp absorption line systems is much larger when derived from C IV than from Mg II. This effect does not result from an evolution of the cross-section of the C IV absorbers. Indeed using a well defined sample the auhors derive this cross-section in the redshift range 1.3 - 2.3 and do not find any convincing evidence for a cosmological evolution. The authors also discover striking differences between the distribution of the rest equivalent width of the C IV and Mg II absorption lines.
