The observed properties of the Lyman-alpha absorption lines in QSOs are discussed. These include (1) statistics of the lines, (2) evidence for evolution in redshift, (3) equivalent width spectrum, (4) the clustering properties, (5) evidence on the size of the absorbing objects, and (6) the limits on associated lines of heavy elements. It is argued that the ejection hypothesis for the origin of the lines is unlikely and that they probably arise in cosmologically distributed intervening objects. Five possible origins for the Lyman-alpha lines are considered; it is concluded that they are primordial, intergalactic clouds not associated with galaxies. Recent theoretical work on the physical nature of the clouds is reviewed.
