The general characteristics of the narrow-line heavy element absorption systems as observed in high resolution spectra are summarized. Definitive observations pointing to the origin of the systems are discussed. Comparison with the observed characteristics of Galactic absorption continue to confirm that the majority of the systems arise in cosmologically intervening material associated with galaxies.
