Fundamental, redshift-independent methods of determining distances to extragalactic objects which by-pass the extragalactic distance ladder, and which are based on the intrinsic properties of the objects themselves, are discussed. A brief analytical exposition is given of a method of determining absolute distances from measurements of the emission, absorption, and angular size properties of objects. The specific application of this method in combination with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect and with stimulated radio recombination line emission to determine absolute distances is addressed.
