The available data on quasars are analyzed in terms of the cosmic evolution of the luminosity function, and the results are compared with findings of other workers. It is shown that the luminosity function of quasars is not a power law; its slope increases with increasing luminosity. The evolution is neither a pure density nor a pure luminosity one. The shape of the luminosity function changes with cosmic time, high luminosity objects having evolved more quickly. The results also suggest that the evolution may be slowing down in the redshift range 3.0-3.5.
