Fireballs, Bolides, Satellite Re-Entry
Scientific paper
The report gives an account of the fireballs reported over the British Isles during the years 1981-82. The reports were collected by the newly formed Fireball Survey, set up by the Association in the autumn of 1980, as a result of discussions between the Meteor and Artificial Satellite Sections. No fireball was reported which could be definitely attributed to the re-entry of an artificial satellite, although reports were received of what were described as fireballs but were, in fact, the flashing of satellites due to their tumbling motion. There was one major event, that of 1981 May 25 at 22h 17m UT, which was reported by over 300 observers. The full record of this event has been published separately.
