Rocket double probe and supplementary observations were used to organize auroral arc types on a physical rather than morphological ground. The classification is based on the relative importance of the polarization electric fields and Birkeland currents. Depending on the dominating mechanism, estimated quantitatively for a number of arc crossings, the arc types are grouped into: polarization arcs, Birkeland current arcs and combination arcs. The high altitude potential distributions corresponding to arc type are presented.
