The steep-spectrum radio source 4C 34.16 lies in a poor cluster of galaxies and is symmetrically bent in a wide C-shape. In order to investigate the origins of its bent shape, we have obtained X-ray, optical and radio observations of this object and its environment. Their ROSAT PSPC observation reveals the existence of substantial substructure in the intracluster gas similar to the features seen in simulations of cluster mergers. The most striking of these features is a "wake" of X-ray emission between the radio lobes. The authors' data and analysis provide strong evidence that the existence of this wake is related to the mechanism responsible for the bending of the jets. Both of these phenomena can be explained by a minor merger event, in which a small infalling galaxy group or a lump of cool primordial gas has disturbed the cluster. A simple hydrodynamical description of the shape of the radio jets, which incorporates both ram pressure and buoyancy forces, places constraints on the galaxy velocity relative to the intracluster gas; we find that a galaxy velocity of ≲300 km s-1 can account for the bending of the jets as well as explaining the density enhancement in the wake.
