The accretion flows in T Tauri stars may consist largely of diamagnetic gas blobs which interact with magnetic loops on the central star through a surface drag. We show that this mechanism can eject blobs from the system in directions away from the disc plane; the angular momentum balance with the accreted blobs gives stellar rotation rates similar to those observed. About one-third of the disc material escapes from the system; given a suitable surrounding gas cavity, this can produce outflows with similar properties to the optical jets observed in T Tauri stars.
