A strong solar flare was observed on July 14, 1980 originating in a sunspot active region designated Yunnan Obs. No. (80) 369 (≡ Boulder No. 2562 ≡ Hale No. 16978). Results of monochromatic Hα-exposures, fine-structure photographs of the sunspots and magnetic field determinations in the active region are used in an attempt to analyze the origin and evolution of the flare event.
