The data from the mapping of 3C 31 are seen as adding new information, particularly on the overall extent of the source and on its polarization properties at long wavelengths. A study is presented here of the spectral index and of the polarization along the radio source. Estimates are made of the internal thermal plasma density, the velocity flow, and the interaction with the external medium. The inner double jet is characterized by its collimation and by a magnetic field directed perpendicular to the major axis. In the broader outer components, the field is seen as having rotated by 90 deg. Emphasis is placed on the similarity of these morphological features in HB 13; it is argued that 3C 31 is a member of a chain of galaxies that may gravitationally interact with the outer components, thus explaining some of the distortions observed. The source shows a striking depolarization dichotomy, the south being more strongly depolarized at shorter wavelengths than the north. The effect is observed in both the inner and outer lobes, suggesting an origin local to 3C 31 itself.
