The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument on the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been making continuous measurements of the vertical distribution of infrared radiation emitted by various atmospheric gases (ozone, water vapor, O2(singlet delta), OH, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide) since January 2002, providing important information about the radiation budget in the upper atmosphere. From these observations, the infrared power and energy radiated by nitric oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) have been computed. This cooling exhibits evidence of long-term influence by the solar cycle. We show this effect over the duration of the SABER mission, from near solar maximum at the time of launch, through the recent unusual solar minimum, to the upturn at the beginning of solar cycle 24. In addition, there is short-term variability in the infrared emission in response to solar events. NO, in particular, acts as a natural thermostat, providing a mechanism for solar storm energy to be transferred to space and the lower atmosphere. We show recent results of the influence of solar high-speed streams from coronal holes and coronal mass ejections on the observed infrared radiative cooling.
