Minor Planets: Near-Earth Objects

When routine computations suddenly showed the possibility that the asteroid 1997 XF11, by then under observation for three months, might be on a near-collision course with the Earth in 2028, humanity was presented with an ideal example of an "impact hazard". Given the recent fivefold increase in the rate of discovery of potentially hazardous asteroids, the initial 1997 XF11 apathy suggests that a real danger might not be noticed. Simple steps are set down to ensure that this does not happen with future discoveries.
