A method for the determination of rhenium in molybdenite is described for concentrations down to 10 -7 g/g. Separation of microgram quantities of rhenium from molybdenite is effected by a pyridine solvent extraction and the rhenium concentration determined by stable isotope dilution. Rhenium determinations were made on molybdenite specimens sampled at various localities throughout the Australian continent. Their rhenium concentration cannot be correlated to geographical distribution, geological age, or the geology of the deposit. Within restricted regions, however, pipe deposits are demonstrably lower in rhenium concentration than are vein type occurrences. The hypothesized enhancement of rhenium in molybdenites associated with copper mineralization is substantiated in general although one remarkable exception to this relation is noted.
