It is shown that a clockwise-rotating vortex of equivalent ionospheric currents is formed ahead of a westward-spreading auroral bend. The current vortex comprises the region of positive values of magnetic and electric field vector divergences. This finding indicates that the region in question contains longitudinal currents flowing into the ionosphere, the integral magnitude of the currents being 10 to the 4th - 10 to the 5th A.
