The disadvantages of searching for broad emission line objects on an emulsion whose sensitivity peaks mimic those emission features are outlined. The IIIa-F emulsion was used with UK Schmidt telescope plates to find high red shift quasars (z3). Far fewer objects than expected from extrapolations of low red shift data were found, since the Lyman alpha emission feature of the high red shift quasar is not as prominent as that for low shift due to the irregular sensitivity response of the emulsion. A 4 m telescope, IIIa-F survey also failed to find the expected number of high red shift quasars. The emission lines used to identify the objects are near the sensitivity peaks of the emulsion, and no objects are detected where emulsion sensitivity drops by 0.5 mag (6000 to 6500 A).
