Using all high resolution data on QSO spectra available to date, the authors have constructed large unbiased homogeneous samples of sharp metal-rich absorption systems. In an unbiased sample of 47 QSOs there are 47 C IV doublets and only 7 Mg II doublets. Including homogeneous data on a priori known absorption systems raises the number of C IV and Mg II doublets to 70 and 26 respectively. The authors present the results of a search for cosmological evolution of these absorbers. They also looked for criteria to test for possible differences in the properties of low and high excitation systems, and discuss the results obtained for the distribution of the rest equivalent width of the absorption lines.
