We present the results of a multiband study (BVRIJHK') of a sample of local late-type spiral and irregular non-cluster galaxies aimed at establishing their colors and evolutionary stage. Our findings support a scenario whereby dwarf (low mass) irregular galaxies are characterized by younger stellar populations with respect to massive ones. Indeed, their bluer optical and optical--IR colors, lower mean metallicity and higher HI percentage are most easily explained by an early evolutionary stage.
