Although there is much evidence to support the merger hypothesis there are also some issues that remain unresolved. I will focus on a few interesting aspects: 1) Galaxies with shells are generally thought to be a result of a merger. I will discuss an example of shell formation without invoking a merger. 2) Globular clusters can be used to constrain the history of their host galaxy. I show that the properties of globular cluster systems in ellipticals are not compatible with that expected from an evolved gaseous merger. 3) Large elliptical galaxies have hot gas halos. We might therefore expect the late stage of a spiral--spiral merger to have generated a hot gas halo -- but this is not the case.
