Scientific paper

The present volume discusses the NASA search for evidence of technological civilizations in space, strategies for SETI target selection, and recent progress in deep-space optical communications. Attention is given to fundamental factors affecting the optimum frequency range for SETI, an economic rationale for extraterrestrials using lasers for SETI, superior utility of lasers for interstellar beacons, communications, and travel, and radio and optical SETI from the Southern Hemisphere. Other topics addressed include the application of one measure of search merit to optical SETI, large M-ary pulse position modulation and photon buckets for effective interstellar communications, and amateur optical SETI.
