Scientific paper

VV Cephei is an eclipsing binary system consisting of an M supergiant primary star and a hot component of unknown type which is most likely a main-sequence B star. The primary star is sufficiently cool and luminous to be losing a significant amount of matter in a stellar wind, similar to α Ori and other M supergiants. These stars are losing about 10-6Msun/y which forms an extended circumstellar envelope. Despite decades of research effort, the mechanism of this mass loss is as yet unknown.
