Scientific paper

The present conference on large telescopic optics discusses ion-assisted evaporative coatings for 2-m diameter optics, large SiC optics, ultralightweight-optics fabrication for advanced requirements, stress-polishing techniques developed for the Keck telescope's primary mirror, and the rapid optical figuring of aspherical surfaces with plasma-assisted etching. Also discussed are the NOAO testing procedures for large optics, a nonoptical technique of large optical surface fabrication, knowledge-based optical system design, and a scanning Hartmann instrument.
