The particular case of a symmetric approach of three gravitating point masses is considered. It is shown that the problem has a critical mass of 55/4 m for the middle body, which the two other bodies of equal mass approach from different sides. If the mass is greater than critical, the reaction of the middle body to the approach is of a qualitatively regular nature. Otherwise there is a high sensitivity to the initial conditions, which results in dynamic instability and possible chaos.
