The role of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory in studying the most
violent events in the universe is discussed. The instruments used by the
Observatory are described, including the BATSE, OSSE, COMPTEL, and
EGRET. The objects to be studied, including AGN, gamma-ray pulsars, and
the Magellanic Clouds, are discussed.
