The Magellan Spacecraft has sent back to Earth more data than all previous United States planetary spacecraft combined. To distribute the Magellan Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, a complex worldwide network of computers is being utilized. Planetary Science Investigators in the United States and many foreign countries gain access to the data through these computing facilities.
This paper briefly reports the processing done by the Magellan Project and the various data products made available for distribution. Described in more detail are the computing centers offering image browsing, catalog perusal, and data distribution and the various access modes available to a user of the Magellan SAR data. The paper provides a guide for the uninitiated investigator on how to access Magellan SAR data.
The various computer centers included in this worldwide distribution network are the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), the Planetary Data System, the Regional Planetary Image Facilities, and the Magellan Data Management and Archive Subsystem and Team. Together these facilities form a worldwide image display and data access capability that no previous planetary mission had available during the life of its mission. Although other United States planetary mission data are or will be available through these same facilities, the sheer volume of Magellan data through this distribution capability represents a first for planetary science investigators of being able to acquire data during a active planetary mission.
