The LDEF Interplanetary Dust Experiment (IDE) recorded over 15,000 impacts during the first 346 days of the 5.7 years that LDEF spent in low Earth orbit. The only experiment aboard LDEF to provide high resolution temporal information about impacts, IDE consisted of six trays of detectors, mounted orthogonally to each other, which maintained a fairly constant orientation relative to the spacecraft motion. Impacts recorded on three trays (those located on the Space and Earth-facing sides of LDEF and the one on LDEF's trailing edge) show only a small number due to orbital debris, the majority appearing to have been caused by `natural' impactors such as interplanetary dust. The data show impacts from particles appearing to come from near the solar direction (Beta meteoroids) and analysis permits a flux estimate in the range of 10-4 - 10-5 impacts m-2 s-1. We compare the results between detailed numerical models based on the theoretical work of Grün, Zook, and others, and the interplanetary dust impacts recorded by IDE.
