An overview of the history of gamma-ray astronomy is given starting with predictions in the 1950's and first detections in the 1960's. Tremendous efforts have been made since then, with exciting discoveries, which finally culminated in the "Golden Age" of gamma-ray astronomy which we are presently experiencing. In the context of the history of gamma-ray astronomy, INTEGRAL is the logical next step. It will build upon previous results and expand our knowledge of the gamma-ray sky.
