With a 19.5 ks Chandra exposure we have imaged the intracluster medium around the radio galaxy 3C294 at redshift z=1.786. The temperature of the gas is 5 +/- 1.5 keV. We propose here to observe the cluster for ten times longer in order to determine the temperature to within 0.5 keV, measure the metallicity to 0.2 solar, and search for any large temperature gradient in the gas - the temperature profile may be similar to that in nearby clusters with high surface brightness and decrease inward. We shall also measure the X-ray spectrum of the emission from the (highly absorbed) central active galaxy and hotspots. The 3C294 cluster is at a redshift twice that of any other known cluster for which such precise measurements are likely to be obtained.
