Electronographic surface photometry in five wavebands has been used to determine the reddening law for the dust lane in the elliptical galaxy IC 4320 in the wavelength range 428 - 653 nm. The extinction varies linearly with inverse wavelength with a ratio of total to selective extinction R = 1.9, implying that the dust grains are smaller than in our Galaxy. This could be due to a different formation mechanism, or may result from gradual destruction of the dust in the time since it was last replenished by star formation - a period of approximately 5×108 yr is required. This may provide a means of dating these dust lane systems.
