The energetics of the eruptive volcanic plumes observed by Voyager 1 on Io is examined, taking into account the role of sulfur dioxide as the volatile driving pyroclastic volcanism. Limiting velocities of a fluid system expelled from a volcanic vent are estimated using a simple model of adiabatic decompression of the system as it moves isentropically up the volcanic conduit. The calculations are applied to the case of a two-phase SO2 system expanding isentropically from an initial state at 393 K and 40 bar. The maximum plume heights calculated from the exit velocities are shown to agree with the observed maximum plume heights and volcanic deposit distributions. Observation evidence also indicates the presence of elemental sulfur and SO2 frost on Io and a model of an upper crust consisting of elemental sulfur and SO2 overlying a layer of molten sulfur is proposed which accounts for the observed volcanism.
