The role of parity-violating events in stellar collapse is considered. It is shown that neutrino emission in the collapse is asymmetric as a result of the nonconservation of parity in weak interactions. The generation of neutrino energy fluxes by magnetic fields in the presence of electrons, which are polarized by the magnetic field, is shown to lead to the preferential scattering of neutrinos so that their momenta are correlated with the magnetic field. The effect is estimated to account for a recoil velocity of the stellar core of approximately 5 x 10 to the 4th cm/sec, in comparison with actual pulsar velocities of 10 to the 7th cm/sec. Neutrino fluxes generated by azimuthal magnetic fields are also shown to cause an asymmetrical redistribution of angular momentum flux.
