Scientific paper

The discovery of a ring around Jupiter with a radial position of 1.7 Jovian radii, a 30 km thickness and 10 to the 4th km radial extent is presented and an evaluation of some of its basic properties are presented. Estimates of the optical thickness of the ring, number densities as well as the average size of ring particles are made, using proton data from the UCSD trapped radiation detection instrument. Two basic factors of satellite absorption are presented: (1) the effective absorption cross-section of the satellite, and (2) the time scale for diffusion of charge particles across the sweeping corridor of the satellite.
