The paper presents an historical outline of the understanding of the process by which stars, such as the sun, produce energy to radiate. It is noted that the present theory of energy production in stars involves the production of neutrinos. However, recent experiments show that fewer than the expected number of neutrinos are being detected. Attention is given to the problem of the 'missing solar neutrino' and some solutions proposed in recent years are reviewed. Finally, a neutrinoless-fusion process is proposed.
