The effects of a short and intense burst of radiation on the dynamics and charge distribution of a low density, surrounding astrophysical plasma are investigated. The passage of the radiative flash causes a sudden acceleration on the electrons and generates a transient charge separation with the production of an intense electric field, that tends to restore charge neutrality. During this phase the electric field may effectively accelerate ambient charged particles to very high energies. This scenario may be relevant to the description of transient X- and gamma-ray sources.
