It is now recognized that the neutron stars that we observe as radio pulsars have space velocities much greater than those of their progenitors. An early explanation for these large velocities attributed them to the recoil in a close binary unbound by a supernova explosion. However, a number of observations now hint at a natal origin. I will review and propose possible physical mechanisms for the yet mysterious origin of kicks and discuss their implications in light of the recent discovery of binary geodetic precession and apparent kick-spin alignment seen in a number of pulsars. The consequences of these large kicks on the evolution of the neutron star population in the Milky Way are finally explored.
