The possibility that the predicted number of chance pairings occurring among random space velocities of any sample of stars is affected by their nonuniform density in velocity space was studied. The velocity space of 171 K and M dwarfs was divided into volume elements whose star counts were compared with those predicted by a Poisson distribution, to test for randomness. Results for late-type dwarfs strongly suggest that a single velocity ellipsoid forms a satisfactory model for their motions and that no statistical evidence for wide pairs or triples is evident. Wide pairs appear to be at best a rare phenomenon in all but the very young stars and at worst nonexistent.
