Considering the magnetopause as a thin current sheet, and applying Maxwell's third equation to a vector superposition of magnetic fields of different origins, the orthogonal components of the magnetopause current intensity can be determined. Analyses of ISEE and HEOS 2 magnetometer data for the dayside magnetopause, outer cusp, and near earth magnetotail regions show that the magnetopause current possesses both a magnetospheric magnetic field aligned component and a cross field (Chapman-Ferraro) component. Further, it appears that particularly at low latitudes near noon, the magnetospheric magnetic field aligned component is a useful parameter with which to these calculated magnetopause field aligned currents, and their variations with both the dawn-dusk component of the interplanetary magnetic field and local time, are investigated in relation to statistical studies of the high latitude ionospheric Birkeland current flow.
