The medium energy particle spectrometer on board ISEE 2 was used to study dayside magnetopause crossings between local times noon to 0800. Evidence was found for a layer of ions (E 20 keV) just outside the magnetosphere, with a thickness varying from 0.05 to 0.09 Earth radii, increasing from the nose to the flanks. The ion flow is along the boundary, at pitch angles of 180 deg to the magnetic field. The total rate of energy flow, when extrapolated around the entire magnetosphere is of the order of 10 peta ergs/sec. The electron layers are coincident with the ions, but are less intense. Their flow is sometimes the same as that of the ions, otherwise it tends to be isotropic.
