The magnetopause was observed near the geostationary orbit on the GEOS 2 satellite. Quasi-static electric and magnetic field observations provided information for different local times; one event in particular, on August 28, 1978, provided a unique opportunity when GEOS 2 travelled near the magnetopause for several hours. The electric field has a component in the direction of the magnetopause current during most crossings; the resulting power dissipation is of the order of 100 W/km sq. This implies that field line reconnection must be effective during this time. The derived electric field drift is found to have a component towards the magnetopause on the magnetospheric and magnetosheath sides. The electric field is probably due to the existence of a polarization layer generated by the penetration of magnetosheath ions into the magnetosphere.
