Cosmic rays, discovered in 1912, are tiny charged particles traveling through space. Some come from our Sun, but others come from other parts of the universe. They are heavily influenced by magnetic fields. The leading theory of the origin of high energy cosmic rays says that they are boosted into motion by supernova explosions. A new generation of detectors is now at work studying cosmic rays.
