Long slit spectroscopy for the radio galaxy IC 5063 has uncovered a clear rotation pattern for the gas close to the nucleus and a flat rotation curve further out, to at least 19 kpc. From direct measurements of the gas density at small radii, and from an ionization equilibrium argument at radii greater than about 3 kpc, it is found that the gas is clumpy, with a filling factor of the order of 0.01 throughout the nebulosity. Strong excitation gradients are observed, with both the temperature and the degree of ionization of the high excitation component increasing with radius. This implies large gas density gradients, as well as some decrease in the heavy element abundances with radius. For O and Ne, an underabundance of a factor of 2-3 in the nucleus, and about twice that at a radius of 3 kpc, are derived. The mass of X-ray gas is estimated to be of the order of 10 to the 10th solar masses.
