The possibility that QSO's may belong to an early phase in the evolutionary sequence of galaxies is investigated. This is considered because of the striking similarities between QSO's and the nuclei of N, Seyfert, radio, and normal galaxies. The hypothesis that a QSO consists of a bright central object embedded in an extended nebulosity was examined, and the ratio between the intensity of the bright central object and that of the surrounding nebulosity in the visual band of wavelengths was calculated. The ratio was used to calculate the apparent visual magnitude and the absolute visual magnitude of the bright central object, as well as that of the surrounding nebulosity of the QSO in the sample, and a criterion was proposed for the detectability of the surrounding nebulosities. Calculations made for N, Seyfert, and normal galaxies show an evolutionary sequence: QSO's, to N galaxies, to Seyfert galaxies, to normal galaxies.
