Spica (α-Vir) is a high-latitude (b=+50.8°), nearby (80 pc) B-star (T_eff 24,000 K). It is surrounded by an HII region, about 16° in diameter, which was discovered via its Hα emission (Reynolds 1985, AJ, 90, 92). We present far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the Spica HII region obtained with SPEAR, an imaging spectrograph operating in the 900-1700 Angstrom waveband. A few low ionization lines, including SiII* λ1533, are detected in the HII region spectra. The nebula is clearly seen in continuum emission. We analyze the FUV emission from the Spica HII region. We supplement our results with published maps of the nebula in other wavebands and, by using photoionization models and radiation transfer models, characterize the properties of this exemplary B-star HII region.
The SPEAR (FIMS) Mission is supported by NASA grant NAG5-5355 and the Korea Ministry of Science and Technology.
