The internal coronagraph and the external occulter are two methods which have been proposed for imaging extrasolar planets; each has its own strengths and weaknesses. An internal coronagraph requires very accurate wavefront control, while the external occulter requires precise positioning and shape. It has been proposed to combine the two technologies to make a hybrid occulter, which would ideally reduce the tolerances required on each system individually. We examine the performance of the combination of a 15m occulter at 30000km, creating circular or annular shadows, and an apodized pupil Lyot coronagraph placed at the aperture of an on-axis telescope. We show that this design can produce 1010 contrast over a 400-1100nm spectral band.
