The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph will provide new observing methods for the Hubble Space Telescope and will implement capabilities of some existing instruments in innovative ways. We will describe important features of the COS TIME-TAG observing mode, which provides 32-msec time-resolution and, in the case of the FUV channel, includes pulse-height information from the microchannel plates which can be used in post-observation processing to improve data quality and minimize background noise in low signal-to-noise observations. We will also discuss the role of the user-specified "buffer-time” in optimizing COS scheduling and data quality. Additionally, we will present the benefits of the innovative "tagflash” observing feature which will be used to improve on-target scheduling efficiency and will allow the CALCOS pipeline to make an accurate correction of any drift of the spectra.
