The Astronomical Photographic Data Center (APDC) has been established at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). The mission of the Center is to help preserve astronomical photographic data, first by serving as a long-term repository for plates and films and eventually by making this material available electronically through the internet. Over 35,000 plates have been archived at the center in its three years of existence. The largest collections are CTIO 4-m plates, CTIO and Warner and Swasey direct and objective prism Schmidt plates, and University of Michigan spectra. Preliminary catalogues of the plates are available on line. The APDC will employ archiving methods compatible with the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics' plate scanning project and suitable for use by the National Virtual Observatory. These include high-resolution digitization of the photographs and the associated plate envelope and observing log information.
