Timmes et al. found that metallicity variations could theoretically account for a 25% variation in the mass of 56Ni synthesized in Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and thus account for a significant fraction of the scatter in observed SN Ia luminosities. To test for this effect we use data from Supernova Legacy Survey: we convert SN peak magnitudes into 56Ni mass and we use PEGASE-2 galaxy model fits to the host galaxy SEDs to determine galaxy mass and metallicity via the Tremonti relation. We find that the theorized effect can only account for a small fraction, approximately 10%, of the dispersion in SN Ia 56Ni mass and thus luminosity. This is because the effect is dominant at metallicities above solar, though SN hosts have predominantly solar or subsolar metallicities. We find that the mean stellar-weighted age of the host galaxy better correlates with 56Ni mass, thus the age of the progenitor is likely to have more influence on SN Ia luminosity than metallicity.
