We present results from "The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey" (THINGS), a large VLA program that mapped the HI 21-cm line at high resolution and sensitivity in 34 nearby galaxies. We combine these maps with data at other wavelengths to build a detailed picture of environment and star formation. From near- and mid-IR data (SINGS) and FUV maps (GALEX NGS) we know the distributions of recently formed stars and stellar mass. From CO maps we know the distribution of molecular gas, and from THINGS we know the distribution of HI and kinematics. We use the resulting data set to test proposed star formation thresholds and recipes in 28 nearby galaxies. We find that the stellar potential well plays a key role regulating star formation in normal spiral galaxies and that recipes which incorporate only gas surface densities or kinematics cannot accurately predict star formation in our data.
