Recent measurements of the absorption spectra of two fulleranes in the visible band are compared with the spectrum of one of the components of a two-component model of the interstellar extinction. The spectra of C_60H_2 and C_60H_4 are dominated by a smooth continuum that is found to resemble the extinction curve of the variable component of the model. The only other clear feature in the molecular spectra is a peak near 4350Angstroms which is responsible for just over 2 per cent of the opacity of these species in the visible band; the wavelength of the peak corresponds approximately to that of the peak in the very broad structure on the interstellar extinction curve, as does the equivalent width, but the profile is different. The variable component of the extinction is usually attributed to a population of small dust grains, the spatial variability being caused by a dependence of the size distribution of the particles on the local density of the interstellar gas. No acceptable explanation is known for the very broad structure, but the new measurements lend support to theoretical speculation that both of these interstellar phenomena have a molecular origin and that the spatial variability is a chemical effect.
