Sediments collected from a Norwegian anoxic fjord have been analyzed for Fe, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn. With the exception of Zn, the dominant factors effecting their distributions are the mineralogy of the land-derived lithogenic material and the abundance of organic matter. The importance of the chemical properties of the sedimentary environment upon the distribution of Zn, and to a lesser extent Fe and Co, has been evaluated by comparing their distributions in the fraction of sediment soluble in dilute acid with their distributions in suspended phases from the water. Within suspended matter filtered from the water, Fe and Co exhibit a fivefold and zinc a sevenfold increase in abundance to a depth of 20 m--the depth of a strong pycnocline, of a change in Eh from positive to negative, of a sharp decrease in pH, and of the replacement of O 2 by H 2 S--paralleling their distributions in the acid-soluble fraction of the underlying sediment. Below 40 m Co decreases in abundance in both suspended phases and sediments. Chromium is relatively abundant in suspended phases from the upper 20 m, but decreases sharply below this depth. The concentrations of Fe, Co and Cr, in filtered water samples, roughly parallel that of PO 4 3- , a decomposition product of organic matter. This supports analyses of the sediments which showed Fe and Co to be partially dependent upon the abundance of organic matter.
